The current study tested a large sample of anthropometric data for mismatch levels against national and international office furniture standards using dynamic seating as a framework with traditional and perching mismatch equations, applied to three recommended dynamic seating components. Dynamic seating (alternating across sitting, perching, and standing) has been suggested as an alternative to overcome those problems. Highly prevalent, office work is associated with sedentarism and physical discomfort due to prolonged sitting. One proposal to minimise red Declaration of competing interest Monitoring time was shared between the traffic light and the CDT and no difference was found in attention to important targets in relation to the CDT in the monitoring loop. The active CDT caused cyclists to regulate their speed to the expected green signal, and reduced start-up delays were noted in the regulating loop, as were signs of more red light violations. The outcomes supported the ECOM predictions. This is one of few studies regarding CDTs for cyclists. Applying the ECOM as an analytical tool, cyclist behaviour suggests that both Conclusions Regardless of behaviour, the necessary information was sampled to the same degree both with and without the CDT. Depending on the current situation, different adaptive behaviours were demonstrated. ![]() The results all indicate that cyclists seek and use the information that is presented to them on a CDT showing the remaining time left to green, in order to make the passage through the intersection more comfortable. Note that the traffic light may change several times after the approach, i.e. 7 show stopping behaviour and red light violations depending on the colour of the traffic light on approach for the baseline and treatment conditions, respectively. The participants returned for the Resultsįig. A baseline study was conducted in May 2017, before installation of the CDT, wherein the participants cycled four times along an approximately 1 km long route that passed the intersection where the CDT would be installed. The study was conducted in the city of Groningen, the Netherlands, where a CDT that counted down to green for cyclists was installed at a signalized intersection. The research design was a before-after study with a within-group design. Pedestrian and car countdown timers (CDTs) have been used to help pedestrians make better crossing decisions at signalized intersections (Arhin et al., 2011 Camden et al., 2012 Cleaver et al., 2011 Pulugurtha et al., 2010), increase pedestrian compliance (Paschalidis et al., 2016 Reddy et al., 2008) and safety (Reddy et al., 2008 Schrock and Bundy, 2008), to help car drivers make informed decisions (Yuan et al., 2009 Zhang et al., 2010) and to increase traffic flow (Ni et al., 2013 Wenbo Method The extended control model (Hollnagel, 2016 Hollnagel and Woods, 2005) is used for generating hypotheses of the study. The aim of this paper is to investigate the adaptive behaviours of cyclists by answering the following questions: How do cyclists adapt their behaviour towards a countdown to green sign? Does the adaptation have any detrimental effects on crucial information intake? Because cyclists might respond to this new type of traffic equipment in unexpected ways, it is important to verify that the intended effects have been achieved and that unintended effects have been minimised. An expected side effect was that cyclists would more frequently group together and start to pass through the intersection synchronously. The intention was to facilitate for cyclists to adapt their speed in order to arrive at the intersection when the traffic light was green. In the European Union project Xcycle (H2020 – 635975) a countdown to green sign for cyclists, activated by cyclist presence, was developed and installed at an intersection. ![]() ![]() Installing a piece of road equipment can lead to unintended adaptations by users of the road (Rudin-Brown and Jamson, 2013).

In some cases, the corresponding application does not make efficient use of all the threads available in the hardware. The BIOS offers a variety of options to reduce latency. This document explains how to configure the BIOS settings to achieve optimal computing performance. In general, optimization to achieve greater performance is associated with increased consumption of electrical power. Basically, this optimization operates all the components in the system at the maximum speed possible and prevents the energy-saving options from slowing down the system. While the movie itself, and many of the filming techniques that went into making it, are intended to evoke a bygone era, the acting, thankfully, is modern and naturalistic. Perhaps my biggest disappointment with the look of the movie is again due to budget, and that is it was recorded on digital video, rather than film, which somewhat spoils the illusion of age created by the otherwise spot-on scratches and graininess of the image. The Louisiana swamp full of cultists is probably the most successful set-piece in the film, in which models, props, green-screen, and clever use of light and dark all come together to create a truly effect scene. Still, this is a limitation any film is going to come up against, and what The Call of Cthulhu has managed to achieve with its limited resources is nothing short of remarkable (a must-see ‘making of’ special on the DVD entertainingly reveals the backyard sets and ingenious props used in the production). Though wisely kept mostly in the shadows at first, the climactic sequence does give us a bit more of a clear look at Cthulhu than I think is strictly wise - and, whether he be a nicely done model as in this film or the very best CGI from a major studio, I still think less is more when cosmic dread is the effect one is shooting for. Therefore, it should come as no real surprise that when we finally see everybody’s favorite tentacled monstrosity emerge cranky from his long slumber as a stop-motion model the impact is less than the viewer yearns for. In our age of seeing the Great Old Ones on the covers of CDs and plush Cthulhu toys at conventions, a lot of the mystery has gone out of things that Lovecraft wisely left to the imagination. Far from it - if anything he may be one of the least filmable writers around relying, as he does, on evoking a feeling of dread and awe as much by what he leaves unsaid as by what he reveals. Of course, not everything about Lovecraft is suited to film. The protagonist Thurston’s investigations into his great uncle’s files (here cleverly titled to reflect the chapter sections in the original short) give us the opportunity for grand set pieces (the swamp, the ship, R’lyeh) and bring him closer to a madness that is revealed in a clever way at the end. It could even be said that the elements that make ‘The Call of Cthulhu’ itself sort of an unusual short story - the fact that nearly all of it takes place off-stage, as it were, in various journals, newspaper clippings, or stories related by another character - are better suited to film which, after all, can just show us everything that Lovecraft was telling. ![]() The story, of course, is familiar to fans of Lovecraft, and The Call of Cthulhu sticks very closely to the text during its 47 minute runtime with but a few minor exceptions that I didn’t even notice ( I had to look them up). In surmounting the very limited budget for this project, the choice could not have been better. In leaving some things unseen and unsaid, and in creating an at times stylized environment, this film activates the viewer’s imagination to fill in the blanks - and speeches or effects which would seem silly or dreadful when laid bare in a modern film are instead left in the shadows. Firstly, it does help evoke the period of Lovecraft in a way no film before it ever has (all of the ones I’ve ever seen where contemporary pieces, for a start), and also makes it feel like a world apart from our own. The choice to make this a silent film was a smart one. Not only that - and here’s the really interesting bit - the movie itself is a black and white silent film, as if it had been filmed at the time of the story’s publication in the 1920s.
